The School of Entertainment & Design Technology presents its cultural immersion program at Jiangsu Normal University in Xuzhou, China. This MDC study-abroad exchange to JNU will be the 2nd collaboration between the faculty of the School of Entertainment & Design Technology and MDC’s Confucius Institute program. The course that will be offered, Special Topics in Graphic Design (GRA2991C), will explore, discuss, and analyze China’s history of design and its literature through the study of hand lettering and typography and Chinese culture. Topics will include: color theory, advertising and symbolism. Students will analyze how these areas have impacted the Chinese culture from past to present. This elective course is designed for students enrolled in the A.S. Graphic Design degree program or any other art or design related program but is open to all MDC students in good standing. Along with GRA2991C, students are encouraged to enroll in Elementary Chinese: Level 1 to gain a further understanding of the language and the culture from an academic perspective. Both courses will be six (6) weeks in duration during Summer A of 2017. (2016-3)
Who Will Teach The Course? Professor Eric Cornish will teach GRA2991C, Selected Topics in Graphic Design. An instructor from the Confucius Institute will teach elementary Chinese Level 1. The program is designed to help students develop an understanding and appreciation of the traditional and modern Chinese language, art and design. Students will benefit academically and personally from this cross-cultural experience. The course, Special Topics in Graphic Design, (GRA2991C) will meet the first week at MDC North Campus and will concentrate on program requirements, cultural assimilation, and pre-departure orientation. The next four (4) weeks will be conducted at JSU in China. The sixth (final) week of class will concentrate on post-travel reflection and assignment presentations. All students returning from this study abroad program will be required to submit a travel journal illustrating their experiences, understandings, skills and techniques learned while in China at the conclusion of this program. What Will It Cost? The cost for the 2017 study abroad program, with a minimum 15 students, will be approximately $3,250 for each student and includes: Airfare, lodging at JSU, some meals, ground transportation and entrance fees to historical and cultural sites. Excursions to Beijing and Shanghai, MDC Tuition and travel VISA fees are additional. Students will be responsible for all financial obligations and must adhere to all college policies and procedures in place for study abroad participants. All students must show proof of medical and repatriation insurance as a condition of participation and must sign the MDC Study Abroad Release Waiver forms, as established by the MDC Office of International Education requirements.
